Tucker, GA (January 13, 2026) – Today, Oglethorpe Power announced it has reached another major milestone in the development of its new combined-cycle natural gas power plant in Monroe County, officially selecting Kiewit Corporation through its subsidiary, The Industrial Company (TIC), as the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) partner for the project. Owned by and serving 38 Electric Membership Cooperatives (EMCs) across Georgia, Oglethorpe Power is developing the new facility to support long-term, system-wide load growth across its cooperative membership, including homes, businesses and existing industries—not to serve any single customer or standalone project.
“We are proud to partner with Kiewit through its subsidiary TIC for this critical energy project that will support our mission to deliver safe, reliable and affordable energy to our Members and the millions of Georgians they serve,” said Annalisa Bloodworth, Oglethorpe Power President & CEO. “Its proven success in delivering complex power projects safely, on schedule and within budget, combined with a commitment to safety and community, makes the company an ideal partner for this facility and aligns perfectly with our cooperative principles and dedication to Monroe County.”
The TIC team is expected to mobilize in Spring 2026, with commercial operation of the new facility anticipated in 2029. Once online, the 1,425-megawatt plant will provide reliable, efficient electricity to homes and businesses across Georgia served by Oglethorpe Power’s Member cooperatives.
Building on Oglethorpe Power’s long-standing presence in Monroe County—including operation of the existing Smarr Energy Facility and co-ownership of coal-fired Plant Scherer—the project represents a major investment in Georgia’s energy future. As one of Monroe County’s largest taxpayers, the facility is also expected to generate substantial property and sales tax revenues, which will benefit local schools and county services.
“Oglethorpe Power has been a valuable partner to Monroe County for decades, and their selection of Kiewit subsidiary TIC, a proven industry leader, will bring jobs and other meaningful economic benefits while strengthening the reliable energy infrastructure that supports Monroe County residents and businesses,” said Eddie Rowland, Monroe County Commissioner.
In May 2025, Oglethorpe Power announced the selection of GE Vernova’s advanced 7HA.03 gas turbines for the Monroe County project. TIC and its affiliates bring extensive experience with this technology, having delivered more than 82,000 megawatts of gas-fired capacity over the past decade, including 35 combined-cycle projects, 25 of which feature advanced-class turbines.
“We’re pleased to partner with Oglethorpe Power on this new combined-cycle natural gas power plant that will help meet growing energy demand across Georgia,” said Andrew Gardner, Senior Vice President of TIC – The Industrial Company. “With our proven experience in complex power generation projects and our focus on safety, quality and collaboration, we’re committed to delivering a facility that will provide reliable power for years to come.”
Beyond technical expertise, TIC is recognized for its industry-leading safety culture, strong community partnerships and commitment to local hiring and supplier diversity. At peak construction, the project will employ approximately 1,200 skilled workers. TIC plans to begin workforce recruitment in June 2026, offering opportunities across a range of high-demand skilled trades, including boilermakers, pipefitters and electricians.
