Kiewit helps make homeownership a reality for an Omaha family
Nine families in North Omaha are new homeowners courtesy of Builders Blitz, a Habitat for Humanity of Omaha event supported by area general contractors, including Kiewit.
This was Kiewit’s 11th year participating in Builders Blitz. From June 4-20, employees organized, planned and provided manpower to build Kiewit’s sponsored home. Staff members completed carpentry work while subcontractors provided support with electrical, plumbing and other craftwork. By the end of the build, 88 Kiewit volunteers contributed about 700 man-hours, and five carpenters contributed about 400 additional hours of time.
Kiewit was one of nine general contractors that participated in this year’s build. Beyond building a home, Kiewit provided storage units for every house built in the neighborhood and sponsored a day of meals for volunteer workers.
Kiewit’s three-bedroom house includes an unfinished basement and attached garage. Kiewit employees also adjusted plans to include several customized features requested by the owner, like a pass-through window from the kitchen to the living room to keep an eye on kids while they play. Candyce, an Omaha mother of two, will own the home. She views homeownership as an opportunity for independence and setting a good example of attaining goals for her kids.
Participating in Builders Blitz gives Kiewit employees the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the community. It’s one of many ways Kiewit lives by its core value of stewardship.
“Providing affordable housing raises the spirits of those around the homeowners and motivates positive change in the community,” said Mitchell Hron, a project engineer who managed the build. “It is a humbling experience for the Kiewit folks and gives them a sense of accomplishment in the fact that they’re improving their city as well.”
