The TVA Allen Combined Cycle project team in Memphis, Tennessee, opened its doors to participants in the Mentor for a Day program as part of the annual National Mentoring Month initiative and in partnership with the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mid-South. The program encourages different companies and organizations to invite the community’s young people to visit workplaces and job sites to introduce them to different career choices.
Participants were able to visit the site office at the TVA Allen Combined Cycle project where they learned about the project and more importantly, about potential careers in construction and engineering. Afterward, the kids were able to tour the job site (via school bus) to get a better idea of the size and scale of the project, along with the variety of skills and craftspeople it takes to help a project come together.
The kids took away a newfound appreciation for construction, along with a Kiewit backpack full of school supplies for the coming semester and a gift card to use toward a new winter coat.
